From Course Power Ambassador to Managing the San Francisco Job Market

Darris Thomas is not only passionate about politics, but he is also passionate about Web design and information technology.

The former Course Power ambassador and Benedict College graduate (B.A., May 2015) states that his training from the Minor in Applied Computing helps him navigate the IT industry in San Francisco.

"The training in management information systems has prepared me extremely well to help navigate the job market in San Francisco, California. Eventually, I would like to start my own I.T. business and eventually become a software developer in my free time."

As his website shows, he minored in Applied Computing at Benedict College. His minor program consisted of foundational courses such as Introduction to Computers and Introduction to Multimedia Computing (Web Page Design) as well as coursework in management information systems such as Accounting Information Systems, Business Programming, Internet Marketing, and Database Management.

This minor focuses on the following objectives:

(1) Students will be able to apply fundamental computer skills to solve contemporary technology based research and business challenges.

(2) Students will be able to appreciate the value of an advanced information technology education that is applicable to various disciplines.

Coursework related to management information systems focuses on achieving the following objectives: (1) demonstrate the ability to navigate contemporary accounting information systems; (2) demonstrate the ability to navigate contemporary business information systems including, but not limited to, data management and decision support systems; (3) demonstrate the ability to use the internet to enhance the marketing strategies of organizations; and (4) appreciate the value of a quality technology based education and the profession.
